The Power of One Awards

The Power of One award recognizes what one person with one idea or action has done to improve services to justice-involved women and girls. The mission and vision of AJFO is embodied in the exceptional work and dedication of these individuals. It was with this in mind, that the Power of One Award was created, to recognize their outstanding efforts as champions and advocates for justice-involved women and girls.

2023 - Amy Monsour Santee

The AJFO officers and the 2023 Executive Committee are thrilled to announce the 2023 recipient of the AJFO Power of One Award: Ms. Amy Monsour Santee. Amy's remarkable journey from a private practice attorney to a dedicated social justice champion has left an indelible mark on her community and countless lives in Oklahoma.

In 2006, Amy shone a spotlight on Oklahoma's alarming rate of female incarceration per capita, a previously overlooked issue. Her response was to secure funding and partner with a behavioral health organization, resulting in the establishment of Women In Recovery (WIR) in 2009. WIR is more than a diversion program; it's a holistic intervention offering treatment, work skills, parenting support, and family reunification.

But Amy's dedication didn't stop at WIR. She addressed various criminal justice issues. In 2018, she led the creation of Prosper OK, a strategic response to counter the economic challenges faced by those impacted by the criminal legal system. Amy also initiated Project Commutation, providing free legal representation for incarcerated individuals before the Pardon and Parole Board, leading to the largest mass commutation in US history.

In 2022, Amy established JusticeLink, a program assisting Tulsans in navigating the court system and accessing essential benefits. This initiative has led to reduced jail time, lower recidivism rates, improved economic mobility, and enhanced system collaboration.

Amy Monsour Santee’s unwavering dedication to marginalized communities and her role as a catalyst for positive change embodies the essence of the Power of One. Her remarkable achievements remind us that one person, driven by passion and commitment, can make an immeasurable difference.
